You Really Should Read These

Circling the Drain - Amanda Davis
Wonderful collection of stories from a wonderful woman.
Read one of my favorites, Fat Ladies Floated in the Sky Like Balloons, here

Wonder When You'll Miss Me - Amanda Davis
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, and most wonderful.

Arc D'X - Steve Erickson
Arc D'X is quite possibly my favorite novel. Erickson creates a lush, lyrical and dark world where
love is at once the most transcendant and most destructive force of nature.
Simply beautiful.
(i should also note that this is where i stole 'aeonopolis' from)

Survivor - Chuck Palahniuk
Chuck Palahniuk is the nihlist god of modern literature and my new obsession.
Survivor is a madcap satire of modernity and one of the most quotable books I've ever read.

Geek Love - Katherine Dunn
The best summary I can give is stolen from Maggie Estep:
"It's about the things that leave people together
and the finer points of surgery"

Microserfs - Douglas Coupland
One of those genre novels (in this case, computer geek) that breaks out and captures other readers. Moving, elegant, and very required.

The Sea Came In At Midnight - Steve Erickson
Another Erickson masterpiece where time and space bow to the will of lovers and the chaos of emotion.

Invisible Monsters - Chuck Palahniuk
If Survivor is my favorite Palahniuk, then this one's loss had to be measured by a photo finish.
Another warm, wonderful, nihlistic piece of rebellion to curl up with. GOD DAMN, i love this book.

Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson
Too smart for me.
Too smart for you.
I like to pretend anyway.
You should too.

Love Dance of the Mechanical Animals - Maggie Estep
When I grow up, I'm going to marry Maggie Estep. Or maybe, when I go to New York in the spring,
I'll settle for tracking her down and being her new "Very Young Guy".

Transfiguration of the Commonplace - Arthur Danto
This is a text from my Aesthetics class. I take issue with some of the things said, but it's still a great book on the nature of Art.

Dialectic of Englightenment - Max Horkheimer / Theodore Adorno
I put this here for shits and giggles really: This is in fact the hardest book I've ever attempted to read.
I say 'attempted' because I've never actually gotten through it. It will hurt you.

Engines of Logic - Martin Davis
A great summary of the mathematics (and people behind them) that lead up to the invention of the modern computer.

Hackers - Steven Levy
My all-time favorite non-fiction book. Follows the evolution of hacking from the 50's to the video game boom of the 80's.

The Contortionist's Handbook - Craig Clevenger
Not a how-to guide (at least not in the way you're thinking), but rather a compelling piece of modern fiction.

Bringing Down the House - Ben Mezrich
The real-life story of some MIT geeks who made millions by cracking Vegas. Legally.

You Really Should Listen To These

Bone Machine - Tom Waits
Tom Waits is possibly the coolest man on the planet. There is something about
listening to his later stuff that makes me want to put on my pinstripe suit and
drink whiskey in a smoke-filled cabaret.

Psalm 69 - Ministry
Quite possibly one of the greatest industrial records of all time. It's a love affair.

The Thirteenth Step - A Pefect Circle
Now that Tool is becoming an alt-rock jam band, I'm pinning my hopes on A Perfect Circle.

Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
Acoustic, folky storytelling music from one of the best.

Casting Shadows - Wolfsheim
Very nice synthpop that doesn't sound too much like Depeche Mode

f# a# oo - Godspeed You, Black Emperor
Brilliant and heavily atmospheric. Most commonly known as "that album that has that song from that zombie movie".

Songs Of Love And Hate - Leonard Cohen
My favorite Leonard Cohen album and the ultimate singer/songwriter record.

Wishfire - The Cruxshadows
I would feel remiss if I did not mention at least one goth record. Yeah, they're melodramatic, but it's still a good album.

Calculating Infinity - The Dillinger Escape Plan
Ever wonder what chaos theory would sound like melodized?

FuturePerfect - VNV Nation
One of the finest EBM releases ever. I had to buy a second copy
after I wore out the first one.

Repeater - Fugazi
Not only do I admire Ian MacKaye like mad, but this is one of the best
albums from one of the best bands of the orginal wave of east coast hardcore.

The Art of Balance - Shadows Fall
Old-school metal, complete with silly lyrics like "destroyer of senses" and squealing gutiars

Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie
Sensitive indie rock for people who hate that stuff. I personally hate that stuff, and i love this album
